How To Prevent Your Grill Grate From Rusting

2022-11-08
No matter how much you spend on a Grill Grate, it's an investment. To keep your grill grate from rusting and keep it running as long as possible before you need to buy a new grill, following are the simple tips to ensure you'll be able to grill food in your backyard for many years to come.
While following the tips will help prevent rust from eating away at your grill, it is a good idea to check your grill for rust before each cooking, as grills with loose rust are not safe and eating rust can cause health problems over time.
Avoid pouring liquid directly onto the grill
While many of us love barbecue sauce, to avoid excessive sauce running into the grill's burner and potentially clogging or rusting, apply the marinade directly to the food in the kitchen, rather than during the grilling.
Keep it clean
Barbecue grills should be cleaned after each use to prevent rust.Make sure to turn off the burner on your gas grill before cleaning and use a grill brush to remove any particles that may be stuck to the grill. You may also want to consider using a brushless grill brush for cleaning to avoid any wire bristles coming loose and sticking to your grill.
Give it a deep clean every once in a while

It's also a good idea to do a deeper cleaning on a regular basis. To do this, remove the grill grid, then wash it with hot water, a cup of mild dish soap, and 1/4 cup of baking soda.Leave to soak for an hour, then brush.Once the grill has cooled, wipe the grill with a soft cloth to remove any remaining food or bristles.

Next, clean the burner of the grill with a non-abrasive cleaner and a rag.You want to keep drip pans dry and clean, as they are especially prone to accumulating moisture.Clean the burner holes and inlet holes with a pipe brush.
Don't forget to clean the exterior of your grill with a mild dish soap and/or nail polish that suits the look of your grill.Despite its name, even "stainless steel" is actually prone to stains and rusting, depending on the grade and thickness of the metal.
Oil your Grill
After cleaning, coat gas and charcoal stoves with a thin layer of vegetable oil to prevent future food from sticking to them.Doing so also helps to drive away moisture, thus preventing rust. However, to be on the safe side, do not use spray cans of vegetable oil, as spray cans can explode near a flame.Instead, apply a small amount of oil to a dish towel and use it to spread on the grill.
